Wedding Prep: Glowing Skin for Your Big Day

Young bride with soft focussed skin and a warm tone eye shadow.

The key to flawless makeup is healthy skin! In this article, you will be provided with the steps of a basic skincare routine as well as some treatment and product recommendations to help you feel like your most confident self!

Why is Skin Health so Important?

Working in the beauty and wedding industries, I am often asked for makeup recommendations for a flawless finish. And even though makeup products do help create the look of glowing, healthy skin, there is nothing quite like the real thing. This is why I will recommend skincare before makeup products.

Your skin is your body's largest organ but is often neglected. I hope this resource will help you get ready for your wedding and every day of your life.

Every Day Skincare

The first step to your dream skin is your at-home skincare routine. Your routine can be broken down into four simple steps.

Step 1: Cleanse

  • This is your cleanser.

  • It removes any dirt, oils, makeup, and free-radicals that collect on the skin throughout the day.

  • It also preps your skin for the rest of the steps to follow.

  • You should spend at least 90 seconds working this into the skin, take the time to massage!

  • If you are using a makeup wipe or micellar water, make sure you use a cleanser after as well.

Step 2: Treat

  • These are your serums, exfoliants and masks.

  • These products target specific concerns that you have (pigmentation, aging, acne, etc).

  • Use your exfoliant first, this will allow the rest of your products to sink deeper into your skin.

  • Tip: apply Hyaluronic Acid to damp skin.

  • Make sure you research your products as some shouldn't be used in the same routine.

Step 3: Hydrate

  • This is your moisturizer.

  • There are many different types of moisturizers ranging from light gels to heavy night creams.

  • Finding the right fit for you can take time and it may vary depending on the season and weather.

  • This step helps repair the skin's natural barrier and keeps you hydrated.

  • It is a common misconception that oily skin does not need moisturizer, not using a moisturizer can actually cause your sebaceous glands to overproduce oils.

Step 4: Protect

  • This is your SPF (morning/daytime only).

  • Protecting your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays is the best and most affordable anti-aging.

  • Some skincare products increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, make sure you are protected!

  • Wearing sunscreen every day (and reapplying) helps to prevent pigmentation, pre-mature wrinkles and even skin cancer.

  • It can sometimes take years for sun damage to become visible on the skin.

To Avoid

  • Applying pure essential oils to your skin can cause severe irritation and even chemical burns.

  • Parabens are commonly used in products to prolong shelf life but aren't great for our bodies.

  • Sulfates can be very harsh on the skin, stripping it of it's natural oils which can lead to irritation.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is best to avoid products that are "systemic" meaning they enter the bloodstream. iS Clinical products are all non-systemic and a great choice!

  • Alcohol (ethanol, isopropyl, propanol, denatured...) can also dry out the skin.

Important to Note

Everyone's skin is different. Not all products work for everyone, and that's okay! I highly recommend going for a facial or skin consult and speaking to your esthetician about your skin concerns. Not all products are created equally, some contain lots of filler ingredients and fragrances which can irritate the skin. Pharmaceutical Grade skincare products are at a higher price point but will usually last longer and you will see results sooner.

My Recommendations

I would highly recommend finding a skin studio that offers iS Clinical Fire & Ice facials. If you are located in Winnipeg, I suggest checking out The A'esthetic Skin Studio, they are all highly knowledgeable and offer great services. The Fire & Ice facial is a great week-of-the-wedding treatment, it gently and safely resurfaces the skin, leaving you with an ultra-healthy glow. They also offer The JetPeel, which is a great pre-event treatment to enhance glow and get a deeper exfoliation.

As for products, the iS Clinical Active Peel System can change your skin in just 6-weeks leading up to the wedding. These tiny, yet powerful wipes gently exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. One box of Active Peel gives you 15 treatments, which works out to be the perfect number of treatments, pre-wedding. Here's a schedule of when you'd use it if you were getting married on July 29th;

  • Week 1: June 18 + 21

  • Week 2: June 25 + 29

  • Week 3: July 3 + 6

  • Week 4: July 10, 12 + 14

  • Week 5: July 17, 19 + 21

  • Week 6: July 24, 26 + 28

Plan for the Long Haul

To conclude, flawless makeup is nearly impossible to achieve without prioritizing the health of your skin. While makeup can enhance your appearance, nothing beats the natural glow of well-cared-for skin. A daily skincare routine consisting of cleansing, treating specific concerns, hydrating, and protecting your skin with SPF is essential. Not only will your skin look and feel amazing as well as be ready for makeup on your wedding day, you are investing in your skin's largest organ and setting up habits for the rest of your life.

Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so consult with a skincare expert for personalized recommendations. By following a skincare timeline and incorporating professional treatments and quality products, you can ensure that your skin looks its best on your wedding day and beyond, allowing you to feel confident and beautiful.
